Argentina 1 Belgium 0 - World Cup quarter-finals full time report

Argentina advance to the semifinals where they'll face Netherlands after they won 1-0 against Belgium in the quarter-finals. The only goal was scored by Gonzalo Higuain in the 8th minute. Until the end of the match there has only been a handful of shots on goal by both sides and Belgium have failed to score for the first time in this tournament and are going home. This is the first time Argentina advance to the semifinals for 24 years.

Argentina may not be spectacular on the pitch but they grinded out this victory the way it's supposed to be done, with a clever defensive display and a good midfield performance. Lionel Messi was the best player on the pitch but the others did their part as well, and it was enough to keep Belgium at bay. Apart from the goal scored in the 8th minute, Argentina had only one more good chance in this match when Messi was denied by Courtois in injury time. Argentina lost Angel Di Maria to a thigh injury and it's likely he won't play in this World Cup again. But even without him, Argentina were the better opponent and didn't allow Belgium to have much hopes of equalizing.

Belgium played their usual defensive game for almost the entire match, only opening up near the end, but the Belgians have failed to create a dangerous situation and this is the first time they haven't scored a goal in this tournament. Nothing worked for the Belgians, and their four shots on target have been too little to have any hopes of knocking out Argentina. The Gauchos seem to have beaten Belgium with their own weapon, a defensive display which doesn't allow the opponent to play football, and they had the advantage of scoring early so they only had to routinely win this match and they did.
