Belgium advance past USA with a 2-1 victory in extra time

Belgium and USA played yet another round of 16 match which ended 0-0 in regular time, and Belgium scored in the 92nd minute to break the deadlock in extra time. Romelu Lukaku added another one in the 103rd minute and it seemed the match is won, but USA scored in the 107th minute and had two good chances to tie the score in the remaining 15 minutes of play.

The story of this match is USA goalkeeper Tim Howard, as he made 16 saves and therefore became the record holder of the World Cups, beating the previous record of 13 saves set more than 30 years ago. Howard has been the key figure of this match, not only with his saves but with his influence on the USA defence. He deserves the credit for keeping a clean sheet in regular time, and gave his team a chance to win this match with a single goal but they couldn't do it.

Belgium have been the better opponent throughout the match and they have recorded whopping 38 shots on goal, eventually managing to score in the 92nd minute. Belgium have yet to score a goal in this World Cup before the 70th minute.

USA didn't do much on the offensive end as they were preoccupied with keeping Belgium at bay, but in the final minutes of the match there was a lot of drama as Julian Green scored for 2-1 in the 107th minute and it seemed USA might just get a dramatic draw followed by an even more dramatic penalty shootout. USA have had a perfectly executed free kick combination in the final minutes, leaving Clint Dempsey alone with the goalkeeper, but he failed to score. USA came so close to equalizing, but have nothing to feel ashamed about, their outing in this tournament has been exceptional and Tim Howard might just win the award for the best goalkeeper in this tournament.

Belgium will face Argentina in the quarter-finals on 5 June.
