Di Maria breaks the deadlock in 118th minute, Argentina beat Switzerland 1-0

It looked as if the match between Argentina and Switzerland is heading for extra time but Lionel Messi had a fine solo run and passed the ball to Angel Di Maria who scored for 1-0 in the 118th minute. In the remaining minutes Switzerland managed to strike the post and to waste a free kick from a promising position in the 125th minute. Argentina therefore qualify for the quarter-finals where they'll meet the winner of the match between Belgium and USA which is played later tonight.

There have been very few excitements in the chess match between Argentina and Switzerland, and this can be credited to Switzerland and their good defending as they've managed to keep a clean sheet against the Gauchos who were constantly attacking. Angel Di Maria in particular had 11 shots on goal, 10 of them on target, and was the best man on the pitch for Argentina. Lionel Messi rarely waked up from his sleep as the Swiss defenders got the better of him, but when he finally found some time on the ball he was dangerous. Di Maria's goal is his work, so Messi once again saved Argentina.

Switzerland didn't do much in offense as they were preoccupied with keeping a clean sheet and trying to dominate the midfield with pressure and high tempo. The Argentinians deserve credit for being able to keep up with the Swiss team for so long and to have enough freshness to score in the 118th minute. The Gauchos earned the goal and the place in the quarter-finals.
