Manchester Utd Win Community Shield

Manchester Utd have beaten Portsmouth 3-1 in a penalty shoot-out to win the Community Shield after the game was decided on penalties. Jermain Defoe was the only Portsmouth player to score in the penalty shoot-out with 3 Manchester Utd players slotting the ball home for the win. The Football Association Community Shield which was previously known as the Charity Shield takes place between the champions of the Premier League and the winners of the FA Cup. The Shield was first played for in the 1908-09 season and replaced the Sheriff of London Charity Shield. In reality, Manchester Utd were by far the best team of the match and should have beaten Portsmouth before the end of normal time but Portsmouth, somehow, managed to hold onto the end. The games first real chance of a goal came in the 36th minuted when Darren Fletcher had a fantastic chance in front of the net but it wasn't to be and Fletcher fluffed the chance. However, Fletcher played a good game and worked hard. He was genuinely unlucky to not get a goal in the match. Another piece of silver-ware for the packed Manchester Utd trophy room.

Team GB have confirmed that they will have a team entered in the 2012 Olympic games but who will coach them and will they win the Gold for Great Britain? Rumour is strong that Sir Alex Ferguson will lead the way and be the 2012 Olympic Coach for the GB Football team but would Manchester Utd let him go to take part or would such an offer even be of interest to him?

Euro 2008 Final – Spain v GermanySpain met Germany in the Euro 2008 Final with the Spanish looking the better side over the last few matches but the Germans, being 3 time winners weren't going to be an easy side to beat. Even when behind you can't discount the Germans, they have a track record of coming back from behind to win big football matches but tonight wasn't going to be their night and the Germans couldn't get back into the match after the Spanish team scored. In the end, by far the best team won, with Spain beating Germany 1-0.

In a re-match of the first game of the Euro 2008 tournament, Spain again clashed with Russia in the semi-finals. Their first match ended 4-1 to the Spanish and in the end, although Russia showed dogged determination, this wasn’t going to be any different with the Spanish team beating the Russians 3-0 to book their place in the Euro 2008 Final against Germany.
