Argentina defeated Mexico on Sunday as expected to book a quarter final match against Germany who had earlier sent England packing. Mexico did their best to stop Argentina but the combination of Messi and Tevez proved to be too strong in the end.
Tevez who had come into this tournament out of form, has gotten better with every match. He scored twice for Argentina. Tevez, first scored in the 25th minute, although replays showed that he was clearly offside but the linesman did not call him and the goal was allowed. Tevez’s second goal was brilliant as he thundered in a powerful shot from outside the box.
Ricardo Osorio, Mexico’s right back made a blunder which Gonzalo Higuain pounced on to score. With this goal, Higuain now has 4 goals in this world cup and is up there with the tournaments leading scorers. |

England will no longer be a part of this World Cup as they went down to Germany on Sunday with a 4-1 thrashing. They never looked like winning the World Cup and to be honest, they should never have been in the last 16. Their performance against Germany was typical of their whole World Cup campaign - below par, mediocre and disappointing.
If you take out Lampard’s and James' performances, this English team were completely outplayed and outclassed by Germany. Yes, many people will talk about Lampard’s goal which was disallowed. Replays clearly showed that the ball went past the line but at the end of the day, England did not lose by one goal, they were systematically out-performed by a superior team.
For a team that came with such hype and World Cup hopes, their high-paid "Superstars" played no better than a decent non-league team. |

Luis Suarez scored twice for Uruguay and made sure that his team qualified for the quarter finals. The Ajax Amsterdam man continues his good run of form and becomes one of the top scorers of this world cup.
Suarez scored for Uruguay in the 8th minute to give them a 1-0 leave of Korea. The Koreans kept pressing forward but were unable to penetrate the Uruguayan defense in the first half. They came back even stronger in the second half and Chung-Yong scored for them in the 68th minute to make the score 1-1. |
