Brazil are strong contenders to win this world cup and they were the clear favourites in their match against Chile. The match proved to be a one sided game with Brazil dominating right from the start.
Juan and Luis Fabiano scored in the first half to give Brazil a commanding 2-0 lead. The Chileans fought hard but were unable to convert the few chances they got. Robinho scored for Brazil in the second half to give them a 3-0 victory.
With this victory, Brazil advances to the quarterfinals and will take on the Netherlands who defeated Slovakia earlier in the day. Kaka was unable to score against Chile and is yet to score a goal in this world cup. The Brazilian star who was coming back after suspension picked up another yellow card in this match.
Although Kaka is yet to make an impact for Brazil, he is clearly a key player for coach Dunga. Coach Dunga told reporters “It is a problem - I don't want Kaka to be out suspended. It looks as though the technical players are punished and those who commit fouls aren't always. This started happening in the group phase and we are going to talk about this with Kaka. It is a concern for him but we don't want to get bogged down with the issue.”
With Kaka not firing, Brazil will be happy that Robinho is coming back to form. Robinho who was awarded the player of the match told reporters that “I'm pleased to have got on the score sheet but I'm even happier about the victory. I've always done well against Chile and thankfully today was no different. There's always room for improvement, but I think we're on the right track and we're achieving our objectives”.
Chile’s coach Marcelo Bielsa was disappointed and said “We weren't able to attack with a real hunger for goals, we tried to score, we got close, but had few genuine chances to score. You can never leave such a tournament without a feeling of disappointment, you would give anything to continue, I just feel sad and disappointed, I am sorry”
Brazil will take on The Netherlands on the 2nd of July in Port Elizabeth. The Dutch have incredible striking power in the form of Van Persie, Sneijder and Arjen Robben and the Brazillian defense will have to be on their toes as they try to keep the Dutch at bay. |
