Ghana managed to eliminate the USA with a 2-1 victory and secure a place in the quarter finals. Ghana is the only African team to make it through to the quarter finals.

It was Kevin-Prince Boateng who scored during the first half to give Ghana a 1-0 lead. The USA came back strong in the second half and their star striker Landon Donovan gave them the equalizer.

The remaining minutes of the second half were exciting as both teams tried to score. However, neither team was able to score and the second half finished on 1-1. The teams took a break and then went into 30 minutes of extra time.

Asamoah Gyan came up with a spectacular solo run and then struck a stunning left footed shot to give Ghana a 2-1 lead in the 2nd minute of extra time. The USA tried hard to equalize but were unable to score in the remaining 28 minutes.

The USA have now been eliminated from their world cup. Landon Donovan was disappointed with the result and told reporters “We were a little naive tonight and at this level you can't do that," said Donovan to reporters after the game. It is frustrating considering all the work we have put in. I'm proud of what the team has done. Football is a cruel game sometimes. One minute you are on top of the world, the next minute you are at the bottom of the mountain”.

Ghana will now face Uruguay in their quarter final match on Friday and will need to have a well planned strategy to cover Uruguay’s Luis Suarez who is amongst the tournaments leading goal scorers.

Ghana’s coach Milovan Rajevac was extremely proud of his squad. He told reporters after the match that “Ghana is now among the best eight teams in the world. I said that everybody loves good football on each continent. So, at the moment Ghana has the support of the world. I have to congratulate my players. They had the force and the strength to go to the end and win.”

Asamoah Gyan was thrilled with his performance and was seen congratulating his team mates for advancing to the quarter finals. The goal scorer said “In 2006 we made the second round, now we have gone a step further. We have made Ghana proud and the whole of Africa proud. I am the happiest man in the world”.
