Manchester Utd Win Community Shield PDF Print E-mail

Manchester Utd have beaten Portsmouth 3-1 in a penalty shoot-out to win the Community Shield after the game was decided on penalties.

Jermain Defoe was the only Portsmouth player to score in the penalty shoot-out with 3 Manchester Utd players slotting the ball home for the win.

The Football Association Community Shield which was previously known as the Charity Shield takes place between the champions of the Premier League and the winners of the FA Cup. The Shield was first played for in the 1908-09 season and replaced the Sheriff of London Charity Shield.

In reality, Manchester Utd were by far the best team of the match and should have beaten Portsmouth before the end of normal time but Portsmouth, somehow, managed to hold onto the end.

The games first real chance of a goal came in the 36th minuted when Darren Fletcher had a fantastic chance in front of the net but it wasn't to be and Fletcher fluffed the chance.  However, Fletcher played a good game and worked hard.  He was genuinely unlucky to not get a goal in the match.

Another piece of silver-ware for the packed Manchester Utd trophy room.
