Germany took on Turkey last night in Basel in their Euro 2008 semi-final clash.
The German side, not looking at their best playing a Turkish side that’s been the upstarts of Euro 2008 so far, causing a few upsets, but in the end the three-time winners Germany claimed the honours and progressed to the final stage of the tournament after closely winning the match 3-2.
The match started out with the Turkish taking control and when the German side had the ball, they seemed to be lacking ideas of how to break the Turkish defence. The first goal came in the 22nd minute when Ugur Boral struck to get a deserved goal.
It only took a further 5 minutes for the German side to get into the game though and Bastian Schweinsteiger managed to level the scores. The Turkish however were creative in their football whereas the Germans looked to be harassed.
Miroslav Klose snatched a goal 11 minutes from the end for the Germans and just when it looked like the Turkish dream of landing a final place in the Euro 2008 tournament was slipping away from them, Semih angled a shot into the German net to send their fans into uproar!
The dream wasn’t to last though and it was in the final minute that the Germans, in the shape of Philipp Lahm, burst the bubble of the Turkish side, known for their own late winning goals in the tournament so far.
Germany now go onto the Euro 2008 Final, to be played in Vienna on Sunday.
However, if they’re going to win the title again, they’ll have to be inspired and fresher than in this game to take advantage of Spain or Russia, both on form and playing a different class of football.
The Germans seem lucky to get this far with a dour side that is lacking commitment, ideas and the skills required to win a tournament of this magnitude. If I was putting my money on a final bet, it certainly wouldn’t be on this German Football side. |
