Euro 2008 - Holland v Russia Holland looked lacklustre towards the end of their Euro 2008 quarter final against Russia and the scoreline, after 30 minutes of extra time reflected it as the triumphant Russia booked their first ever Euro Semi-final place.
The first half was a fairly slow affair with both sides making a few chances but nothing much to trouble the opposing team. Going into the second half at 0-0, this match wasn't showing the flair that both sides, especially Holland, had shown in the tournament to get them this far.
The second half, however, was much better and in the 56th minute it was advantage Russia after a Semak cross met Pavluchenko's left foot which deftly nudged the ball past the Dutch Goalkeeper, Van Der Sar.
It looked like that may have been the end for Holland as the 90 minutes ticked by but the 86th minutes of the match saw Sneijder with a free kick that Van Nistelrooy dived at and heade past the Russian Goalkeeper.
The normal playing time ended 1-1 and it we were set for another 30 minutes of football.
It looked like we may have been going to penalties until the last minutes of the match when Russia in the 112 and 116th minutes, managed to score 2 swift goals by Torbinsky then Arshavin, putting the match beyond the Dutch team.
An exciting extra-time that saw the Russian team win 3-1 and make it to their first ever Euro semi-final. Again they have proved that they're at their best in the closing stages of the match. |
