Today saw two matches being played in Group B. The first Croatia v Poland where Croatia won 1-0 and the second match where Austria played Germany with the Germans winning by the same score. When Croatia met Poland, they rested many of their top players, saving them for the next round but they were still too strong for the Polish side and won 1-0 taking maximum points in the group.
Ivan Klasnić was the Croat that scored the winning goal to catapult them into the next round with a clean sheet. The quarter finals will see them playing Turkey, who spectacularly came from behind to win their match against the Czech Republic yesterday. Poland have now out of the competition.
The second match of the day saw Austria take on the Germans in Vienna and it was the German Captain, Michael Ballack, that scored the winning goal to book a German place in the quarter finals. Ballack scored with a fantastic free kick that thundered in past the Austrian defence and in the the net.
The Austrian Football Team played a valiant game, with sections of the game giving them long periods of possession. They made chances for themselves but lacked a killer strike. Germany will now play Portugal in the quarter finals on Thursday. |
