Euro 2008 - Greece v's Russia PDF Print E-mail

Greece's reign as the UEFA European Champions officially ended tonight when Russia beat them in Salzburg 1-0 putting their chances of qualifying for the Euro 2008 quarter finals out of reach.

Greece still have a game to play, against Spain, but whatever the outcome the holders cannot reach the next round of the Euro 2008 championships. A brisk game where both teams setup and missed numerous chances of scoring making it one of the most enjoyable matches of the Championships so far to watch.  Russia's first half goal by Konstantin Zyrianov put the game out of reach for them fairly early on although the Greek team did repeatedly try to claw back the one goal deficit.

Greece played, as expected, very defensively and left it too late to come out and start to play attacking football which would have enabled them to get back into the match.

Greece's defensive play worked well for them in the last Euro Championships back in 2004 but the teams have studied and gotten wise to their style of play and it hasn't worked well for them at all this year.

To be brutally honest, Russia should have ended the game with more than a one goal advantage as they were the better team on the night but they'll be happy enough that they've done the business and have high hopes for Euro 2008, even although they still have to meet Sweden on Wednesday night to decide whether they will go through to the knockout stages.
